Nutcracker Kids in rehearsal

Ever wondered what it’s like to be one of the young dancers in Oregon Ballet Theatre’s The Nutcracker? The ballet is a holiday tradition, and this year’s production includes almost a hundred kids of various sizes and levels of dance experience. Kids (and adults) spend almost three months learning their parts and rehearsing at OBT’s studios.

We spent a day behind the scenes as the kids rehearsed one Saturday. Here’s a sneak peek at some of the video.

You’ll see Gavin Larsen, one of OBT’s principal dancers, working with the young angels-in-training; and Kevin Poe working with a group of older kids on the party scene. Kevin’s role is to make sure that the young dancers stay true to George Balanchine’s original choreography. Our story about the Nutcracker Kids airs December 17th at 8pm, and Sunday, December 20 at 6pm on Oregon Art Beat. Information about how to see The Nutcracker at the Keller Auditorium is available on OBT’s website.
