New Shows Join KMHD Schedule

KMHD Jazz Radio (89.1 FM) is pleased to announce some new program changes coming to its lineup that will bring even more of the diverse sounds and experiences of jazz to the KMHD audience.
“Our daytime schedule will continue to tell the whole story of the music; its heroes, its trends and artistic accomplishments, with shows that mix classic jazz and the side trips it’s taken over history,” said Matt Fleeger, KMHD assistant program director. “And our evenings and weekends will break out with specialty shows that will bring listeners fresh ideas about jazz while maintaining the vibrant spirit of KMHD!”

Some of the exciting new evening shows include:

“The New Thing” at 9pm on Mondays. Host Tim DuRoche, (Local Musician and director of Programs for the World Affairs Council of Oregon) explores free jazz and the avante garde while showing listeners where it originated.

“Voice of the Blues” at 9pm on Wednesdays. Local blues legend Bill Rhoades will take us on a journey through the heritage of the Blues.

Nick Gefroh will bring Latin jazz and his show “Descarga!” to Thursdays at 7pm. From 9-11pm, long-time KMHD host Sean Brennan will focus on world jazz and blues originating outside of the United States on “Compass Points.”

And the weekends bring even more!

Saturdays at 9am, Host Krishna (a Brazilian music expert and fluent Portugese speaker) celebrates the art of Brazilian jazz and the vibrant sounds of Bossa Nova.

“The Singer’s Voice” with Rebecca Kilgore at 1pm explores the legends of vocal jazz, the obscure and sometimes forgotten names that deserve attention, and the stars of today. As one of America’s leading song stylists, Rebecca finds particular delight in preserving and sharing her passion for the singer’s voice with the public.

And, Sundays at 7pm, award-winning local drummer Carlton Jackson highlights jazz through the civil rights movement and beyond black consciousness with “The Message.”

This amazing array of new programs is possible because of the incredible talent in our community who bring their knowledge to the KMHD audience.

But no new opportunities in life are achievable without letting go of some of the past. To expand our local voice and to make KMHD available to people all across the state via OPB’s digital television signal, we have to say goodbye to some wonderful programs as well. Our agreement with National Public Radio (NPR) does not allow broadcast via television of “Piano Jazz” with Marian McPartland or “JazzSet” with Dee Dee Bridgewater. We know their departure will disappoint many, but we hope that fans will continue to follow them online.

As the jazz station for our region, and one of the oldest listener-supported jazz stations in the country, we’re looking forward to sharing the diversity and the whole jazz story. As we preserve the valuable accomplishments of the past, we hope to enrich the tradition as we move towards the future.

I love the new line up. I will miss Dee Dee and Marian, but the new shows will be a nice change, especially looking forward to Carlton Jackson’s new program The Message. Thank you for continuing to bring enlighting programming to KMHD, I’ve been a supporter and follower for years and now my children appreciate it as well. A great listen!

  2. Christine Says:

Looking forward to Carlton Jackson’s new show! As long as Steven Cantor stays, I’m a happy camper! I LOVE “Beats and Pieces”!

  3. Dan J. Says:

Love the new hour for Nick Gefroh and lots of anticipation for The Message by Carlton Jackson.

  4. Sharon Says:

Where will DJ Santo’s Something Different go on the schedule?

  5. Allen J. Says:

I think the changes will freshen up your evening jazz lineup. I like the variety during the day, I have been a long time listener and I often thought the format was a little stale (before moving to OPB) with a few bright spots. I am looking forward to hearing Nick G. at 7pm on Thursdays - I guess this means I will have to finally join KMHD. So I will send my pledge shortly.

  6. Mark S. Says:

Looking forward to hearing Rebecca Kilgore, a valued resource, Saturday afternoons at 1 o’clock.

  7. Kate Scrivener Says:

Rebecca Kilgore!!! Hosting a show about vocal jazz!!!!!! It’s heaven, I’m in heaven. Great programming, KMHD — You show me that my faith in you is totally in the right place.

  8. John S Says:

I’m glad Nick Gefroh will be on earlier, if not for as long. The separation of Brazilian and Latin Jazz makes sense. So now, I’m going to have to get used to Thursday Night Descarga. He is an amazingly knowledgeable host in regards to Latin Jazz and the local music community.

  9. Linda D. Says:

Can’t wait for Rebecca’s show! The entire line up looks good. Thanks for keeping it real.

  10. Jan Mancuso Says:

Carlton, yeah! Nick at night on Thursdays! And other improvements at the local level, so glad. We’ll be listening on-line after we, sadly, leave Portland.

  11. Mickey Marks Says:

I have called the station twice to find out what has happened to the “Traditional Jazz” programs which have been broadcast on Saturday mornings for many years. Those programs were the main reason I have listened to and supported KMHD. The station has seen fit not to respond to my inquiries. Accordingly, I have decided to suspend my financial support to KMHD.

  12. AllThingsPercussion.net Says:

Thanks to all of you at KMHD for amazing programming once again! You are a brilliant resource for musicians and percussionists alike.

  13. Frank de la Puente Says:

    7-11-10

As long as you leave Jere Lee, Susan, and George Fendel alone, everything is fine. The Brazilian music is a quantum leap improvement over the Dixieland jazz. Money is on the way.

  14. Carolan Gladden Says:

As a former Portlander and back-in-the-day author of “The First Book of Oregon Jazz, Rock & All Sorts of Music,” I’ve reconnected to KMHD and will be listening online to Carlton Jackson’s new show. For sure it will be as outstanding as he has always been as a musician!

  15. Hilda Says:

Hi there…Just wondering how to pull up your playlist.
    Thanks for your help!

  16. Ruth Says:

Still grieving the loss of Radio Deluxe and now Marian McPartland. Sad about the cuts to Divaville and Art Abrams on Saturday. Looking forward to Rebecca Kilgore. Wondering why we contributors are never asked for our opinion before changes are made.

  17. Patrick Says:

Stuck out in what at times seems like the middle of nowhere just got that much closer with the music I miss from an earlier life. Tim DuRoche’s “The New Thing” has made that possible.

  18. Liz Sibert Says:

A shame that you were unable to acquire Joe Bennett for the Brazilian music show. He played an incredible array of artists during his brief tenure as a Thursday host some time ago and his knowledge of the history of the MPB movement was invaluable to this listener. Krishna is OK but if you want the best there is, get Joe back on the air. Quickly, please.

  19. Erik Says:

Here’s a “Message” for you. Something Different was the only reason I ever listen to KMHD. Now I have no reason to listen to KMHD. Goodbye.

  20. Peter Says:

I really agree with Ruth. You are quick to emphasize the “membership” idea at fundraising time but not when it comes to programming. I like most of the additions but miss Al Evans’ saturday night show and Bob Luback’s tuesday night show. Divaville should be longer. I mainly get to listen evenings and weekends, so all the changes affect my listening times. Also I note that when OPB took over KMHD we were promised no significant changes…….What happened to that?

  21. Peter Says:

one more thing: I can’t figure out what the new schedule is because there is no schedule posted on the website. please help us out.

  22. Shirley Says:

Does this mean there will be no more traditional jazz on KMHD?
That is disappointing as Traditional jazz is an important part of the history of jazz. I have listened to KMHD since the beginning and realize it was time for some changes, (for instance the Saturday afternoon lineup didn’t seem to fit).
However, I think “dixieland” should still be part of the lineup. I hope you reconsider this.

  23. kate Says:

Yes, I was disappointed primarily with Divaville now an hour less. I wish there were more traditional jazz. I miss Dr. Jazz but understand how it seems few have the excitement he exhibited for that wonderful era of jazz. So, I listen to the New Orleans station WWOZ in the mornings as they often have trad jazz then.

I was VERY happy to find out Bill Rhoades is again on the airwaves!!!! I missed that he was no longer on KBOO after so many years . . . and of course, I miss Brad Lee Brenner, who kept us abreast of what local blues musicians were up to by encouraging them to come by the play LIVE on the air at Holman’s. This is also the case on WWOZ . . . something I miss with KMHD. I guess it is community supported radio vs NPR radio to some extent.

I do love KMHD regardless of the criticisms and it is most likely true that all of us writing do, but want to express all sides of the coin!

  24. Matt Fleeger Says:

    Hi Everybody,

Thanks for all of your comments. We’re glad to hear that some of you are happy with the changes, and completely understand why some would be upset with some of the movement in the schedule. Radio broadcast schedules are dynamic and typically “in-flux” and that is especially true with an all-volunteer on-air staff. Like you, we’re proud of our hosts and hope that the new schedule will be both easier to read, interact with, and listen to.

@ Mickey: what number did you call? We do our best to return each and every phone message we receive…just be sure to leave your number.

    Matt Fleeger
    Assistant Program Director

  25. Wally Peters Says:

I’ve been listening to the Blues on KMHD for years. I haven’t been able to pick the station for a couple of weeks. Is KMHD is on the air?

  26. tom payne Says:

I often missed the Saturday Trad Jazz program and now I really miss it. I have hopes for the Sunday two hour program; we’ll see. I join Mickey, Shirley and Kate in missing the Saturday opportunity and treasure the U-tube listings found from that program.
A big Brazilian raspberry to Frank; maybe you can get simultaneous feeds from OZ and KMHD?

  27. Mark Says:

Loved “Voice of the Blues”; will you be posting last weeks playlist?

  28. tom payne Says:

Listening to the JRLC take on living Trad Jazz; wow.

  29. tom payne Says:

    JFLC, oops.

  30. E Says:

Am I the only one that hates this new line up???? I clicked on SCHEDULE the page no longer exists. I just arrived from work to hear the Jazz with Soul with the Babyboomer, afterall, it is Wednesday night at 10PM PDT. DJ Santo is pushed to weekenights after hearing him all of these years? What is going on? To make changes like this, loyal contributors will leave. Your changes should have been subtle with notification to those that support financially.

  31. Glen C Says:

I know change is always hard, but it’s amazing that 3 of the 4 shows I enjoy most are now gone or diminished. There should be a way to keep Marian McPartland, by substituting an alternate feed during this time slot if the TV contract is so restrictive. She is so wonderful and talented, and the format of her show is unique and not overlapped by any other programming on the schedule.

Shrinking Nick’s Descarga! belies the long-time KHMD motto of the “full spectrum of jazz”. Latin influences are a very large part of jazz, both historical and current, and again, I don’t see it very well-represented anywhere else in the line-up.

And, finally, altho dj Santo has managed to keep his cumulative hours, you’ve marginalized his genre to an unreasonably late hour for many listeners, and gutted the flow of his show by limiting it to one hour each night. Again, he is bringing something really unique to the station, and– listen up here!– keeping it current. Jazz influences are alive in new music, and that’s what young people are listening to. You also managed to break up the wonderful synergy between Something Different and Beats n Pieces. I predict– because it’s exactly what OPB has done over the years with its miserable management of its meager music programming– that next year, you’ll point to both these programs and say, hmm, your numbers just aren’t there and we’ll have to cut you even more.

  32. Steve Says:

Well, you’ve sucessfully messed with the two best shows on Portland radio. First, you change Something Different to a time when only bartenders are up to listen to it (11 at night!). Then, you shortened Divaville and made it an hour later (my family USED to love to listen to it while we were making dinner during the 6:00 hour).
On the other hand, good job adding Bill Rhoades to the line up. I always liked his Monday afternoon show on KBOO.

  33. Matt Fleeger Says:

    E, Glen, and Steve:

Sorry to hear that the schedule isn’t working for you.

E, we did notify all of KMHD’s listener-members ahead of time about the changes via email and snail mail.

Glen, while we can’t air Piano Jazz and be state-wide via TV at the same time. The program can always be streamed/podcasted online via NPR. We don’t move shows in hopes of cancelling them, we move them to either bring in more audience or to give the host a time that works better for their schedule (remember, these are volunteers).

As always, thanks for the comments.

    -Matt Fleeger

  34. Rick Braun Says:

I will miss the trad jazz show, but its really good to see Bill Rhoades back on the air. And Becky Kilgore is a fabulous treat. I will also miss Al Evans because he was so entertainingly incompetent. Good changes.

  35. tom payne Says:

Listening to the lead-in to the Trad Jazz Sunday show; the announcement was to click on schedule. Lo and behold, I was pleased to see a schedule rather than the typical Microcrud blue screen of death. Thanks.

  36. Kyle Accardi Says:

I’ve listened to Bill Rhoades for nearly 20 years. Thank you for getting him back on the air! He would carry a prime-time slot though.

I’ve listened to KMHD for those same 20 years and understand how Friday might get blues heavy to some. To hear “I’m Bill Rhoades and this is Blue Monday” again on the air would make a big impression to a lot of Portlanders.

How about it? “KMHD, where we spread to blues over your week like cheese on a cracker.”

Also really miss the remotes from Holman’s via Brad Lee Brenner & the other guy who was also awesome. And don’t worry, Diva Ville is long enough.

  37. suzy Says:

I’ve been attempting to listen to the new lineup and give change a chance. I’m disappointed. My husband and I were great fans of DJ Santo. We looked forward to Something Different and the following Jazz with Soul. We really miss that show and being introduced to stuff we wouldn’t ordinarily hear. Nick Gepro is great, but I find I am turning the station off more and more and turning to internet radio. Things seem very disjointed. I do not want to hear interviews in the evening when we are enjoying dinner or just reading. Sorry.

  38. Stephen Kain Says:

If given a choice I would have liked to have the Traditional jazz show on Saturday instead on Sunday. I also enjoyed Deluxe Radio.

  39. Joan Says:

A jazz station without Traditional Jazz?
    Typical.

Not all jazz fans like the smoooooooth & mellow sounds. Besides there’s plenty of commercial stations that play that kind of music.

    No good.

  40. Bruce Stinnett Says:

Totally agree with Liz. Where’s Joe Bennett?

  41. David H Says:

    Something Different - Sunday nights

My family and I miss having something different playing on Sunday evenings during dinner. It was one of my favorite two hours of listening to KMHD. The 11:00 show is too late and too short to allow for the variety that DJ Santo was able to play in his previous two hour slot.

Put Something different back on Sunday nights and make us all happy.
