The January Pilot

Happy January!

This episode brings you interviews with Colin Meloy and John Moen from The Decemberists, and with Portlandia‘s Carrie Brownstein. Plus a poetry reading marathon, a celebration of National Kazoo Day, conversations about the Sundance Film Festival and Boise Voices, and a fearless violinist. Our featured music is by Dusu Mali Band, featuring Ali Farka Toure’s nephew.

More good stuff after the jump!

Even if you don’t have cable or a TV, you can still watch a few clips from the first few episodes of Portlandia, including the restaurant scene we talked about on the show:

Here’s the video from The Decemberists’ recent performance of their new album, The King Is Dead, for OPB Music:

And a few more extras:
* My conversation with The Oregonian‘s Shawn Levy before he went to Sundance
* Charles Olson reading from his own Maximus Poems — check out his great voice!

Thanks for this new show. The host and style of the show will keep me listening. But then I’m a third generation Portlander and love our self-effacing personality.

What a spectacular episode! This is Peabody Award level journalism. In our head-long rush to become a society that has the mandated mission of competing with the world in math and science a program the celebrates the variety, surprise and subtlety of being human is a reassuring pleasure!

I’m looking forward to next weeks show. You got my interest.

I really liked/enjoyed this weekends Speakeasy. Though I don’t love the name. It was awesome to hear about Portland and interviews pertaining to.
Thanks good work and keep it up.

Thanks for giving time to the marathon reading of the Maximus Poems!

Perhaps you could embed a link in that intro paragraph to the website for the Spare Room reading series: http://www.flim.com/spareroom . . . in case anyone curious wants to investigate further.

We appreciate and thank you for your feedback on this new effort. We believe The Speakeasy (working title by the way) is off to a good start. We hope to provide a new pilot once or month (or so) as we seek funding. -Lynne, VP, OPB Radio Programming
